Arrive LIR → Guanacaste Beach
🌊 Arrival- ✈️ Fly into Liberia (LIR). Pick up rental car (4×4 SUV pre-booked).
- Drive 1h 15min to Guanacaste beach area (Playa Hermosa, Conchal, or Tamarindo).
- Check into hotel. Unpack, settle in.
- Afternoon: First beach dip! 🏖️ Walk the sand, warm water, watch the pelicans.
- Evening: Sunset cocktails and dinner beachfront. Ginger (Playa Hermosa, $15–30) or Pangas Beach Club (Tamarindo, $20–40).
- 💤 Night 1 of 3 in Guanacaste — No rush, you've got days ahead.
Sloths + Beach Day
🌊 Beach- 🦥 8am: Diamante Eco Park sloth sanctuary (book ahead, ~30 min from Tamarindo). Guided tour $79 — guaranteed up-close sloth time.
- 11am: Back to the beach. Swim, build sandcastles, relax.
- Afternoon options:
- 🏄 Surf lessons ($40–60/hr, board included) — Tamarindo has gentle waves for beginners
- 🚁 Catamaran sunset cruise ($85–130/person)
- 🛵 ATV tour (2hr, $55/person)
- Evening: Dinner at La Oveja (Argentinian, Tamarindo, $15–25) or Coco Loco (Flamingo, $20–35).
- 🌅 Sunsets in Guanacaste hit different. Find a beachfront spot by 5:30pm.
Beach Morning → Drive to Monteverde
🌲 Transition- Sleep in. Morning: One last beach swim and breakfast.
- Alternate: Rincón de la Vieja NP — Las Pailas loop ($15), wild sloths, boiling mud pots. 45 min from Liberia area.
- 12pm: Pack up. Drive to Monteverde (2.5–3h). Last 15km is gravel — go slow, 4×4 will be comfortable.
- Check in to hotel in Santa Elena or Monteverde.
- 5pm: Sunset at Selvatura Park hanging bridges or just walk into town.
- 🦥 7pm: Night walk with guide ($25–40) — spot sleeping sloths, frogs, insects. A must-do.
- Dinner at Morpho's (Italian/international, $15–25) or Sabor Tico (casados, $10–15).
- 🌡️ Monteverde is cool! Bring a jacket — it's the cloud forest at 1,400m elevation.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Day
🌲 Cloud Forest- 🦥 6:30am: Curi-Cancha Reserve guided walk — best wild sloth viewing in Costa Rica. Entry $17 + guide $25. Your guide will spot sloths, toucans, quetzals, monkeys. Don't skip this.
- Late breakfast at Stella's Bakery ($8–15) — best coffee and pastries in Monteverde.
- 11am: Selvatura Park — 15 zip-lines through the cloud forest canopy ($55–75). Or hanging bridges if anyone's nervous about zip-lines.
- Afternoon: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve ($25) — the classic misty trails.
- Evening: Relaxed dinner at El Roble (traditional CR, $10–20).
- 📸 The hanging bridges are incredible for photos. Morning mist rising through the canopy.
Monteverde → Drive to Arenal
🌋 Transition- Sleep in. Breakfast at Stella's or your hotel.
- 10am: Drive to La Fortuna / Arenal (3.5–4h).
- Two route options:
- Route A (Scenic): Via Lake Arenal — beautiful winding road with volcano views. 3.5h.
- Route B (Detour): Via Río Celeste — stop at the stunning turquoise waterfall ($12 entry). Adds ~1h but worth it for the photos.
- Check in to hotel. Unpack — you're here for 4 nights.
- ♨️ Evening: Baldi Hot Springs ($40–55) — 25 pools, water slides, swim-up bar. Fun and lively, great for families. 🌋
- Dinner at Nene's Italian Grill ($15–25) or Soda La Hormiga (local casados $6–9).
Volcano Hike + Sloth Park + Tabacón
🌋 Volcano- 🌋 7am: Arenal Volcano National Park — hike Las Coladas trail (2.5h, moderate). $15 entry. Walk across 1968 lava fields with the volcano cone towering above.
- 🦥 12pm: Rescate Wildlife (Sloth Park) — rescue center near La Fortuna. Entry $25, guided tour $35. Guaranteed sloths up close.
- Afternoon: Mistico Hanging Bridges ($45 guided). 16 suspension bridges, 2-mile loop through the canopy. Wild sloth spotting from above.
- ♨️ Evening: Tabacón Hot Springs ($75 day pass) — the iconic experience. Thermal waterfall pools at golden hour with volcano views. 💯
- Dinner at Don Rufino (upscale Latin fusion, $20–40).
- 🔥 Tabacón is the splurge. Book ahead — day passes sell out in high season.
Adventure Day — Rafting or Canyoning
🧗 Adventure- Option A: White Water Rafting 🚣
- Pacuare or Sarapiquí River — Class III–IV rapids. Half-day trip $65–90/person. Ticos say Sarapiquí is the best in the country. Transfer from La Fortuna included.
- Option B: Canyoning / Rappelling 🧗
- Lost Canyon Adventures — rappel down waterfalls in a narrow canyon. $75–100/person. 4-hour trip. Unreal experience.
- Option C: Chill Day 🧘
- Sleep in, explore La Fortuna town, visit La Fortuna Waterfall ($18 entry, 500-step hike down). Afternoon at the hotel pool.
- ♨️ Evening: EcoTermales hot springs ($50–60) — quieter, garden setting, 5 temperature pools. Book ahead.
- Dinner at The Gingerbread (excellent breakfast/dinner, $8–15).
Deep Relaxation — Thermal Marathon
♨️ Spa Day- Sleep in. Late breakfast at The Gingerbread.
- 11am: Day pass at The Springs Resort ($80) — 24 thermal pools, volcano views, swim-up bar, club atmosphere. Spend the whole day bouncing between pools.
- Or: Return to Tabacón if you loved it. Or try Baldi for a different vibe.
- Afternoon: Free hot springs at El Chollín ($0!) — local river spot where the hot river meets the cold river. No facilities, very authentic.
- Evening: Coffee tour ($35–50) or chocolate tour at La Fortuna — learn how CR grows some of the world's best coffee.
- Dinner at Don Rufino (upscale, $20–40) or a return to your favorite spot.
- ♨️ You've earned this. 4 nights in Arenal means zero FOMO.
Arenal Morning → Drive Back to Guanacaste
🌊 Return- 🎂 Happy Birthday Yesenia! 🎉
- Morning soak in the hotel hot springs. Sleep in. One last Arenal breakfast.
- 11am: Drive back toward Guanacaste (2.5–3h on paved highway).
- Check into a nice hotel near the beach for the last night. Andaz Papagayo ($350–500) or a Playa Hermosa resort.
- Afternoon: Relaxed beach time. Swim, read, walk.
- 🎉 Birthday dinner: Splurge at a Guanacaste beachfront restaurant. Ginger (Hermosa), Pangas (Tamarindo), or the hotel's fine dining.
- 🎁 Yesenia's birthday on the last full day! Plan a surprise — flowers, cake, something special at dinner.
Morning Beach → LIR → Fly Home
✈️ Departure- One last morning swim in the Pacific. 🌊
- Breakfast at the hotel or a local spot.
- Pack up. Buy souvenirs at the Liberia market on the way.
- Drive 1h 15min to Liberia (LIR).
- Return rental car.
